Abstract

In a joint effort between international aid organizations (including the Red Cross and UNHCR) and container house manufacturers

In a joint effort between international aid organizations (including the Red Cross and UNHCR) and container house manufacturers, 500 expandable container shelters were shipped to refugee camps in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region in mid-2025. These shelters are designed to address the urgent housing needs of refugees displaced by conflict and natural disasters in neighboring countries. Unlike standard container houses, the expandable models can double their interior space from 18 square meters to 36 square meters in just 30 minutes, providing more living area for families. Each shelter is equipped with solar-powered lighting and ventilation systems, eliminating reliance on unstable camp power grids, and includes basic furniture such as bunk beds and storage cabinets. Aid workers on the ground have reported positive feedback, noting that the shelters are more durable than traditional tents and offer better protection against extreme weather conditions, such as the region’s high temperatures and sandstorms. The aid organizations plan to order an additional 800 shelters by the end of 2025 to support more refugee communities.
